Investigators are continuing to look into an unusual incident Monday night that may have involved a self-inflicted stabbing, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 7:35 p.m., a 30-year-old man armed with a rifle knocked on the door of a Dixie Lane home in Oak Harbor.

The man, who had blood on his neck and clothing, told the residents that he had been stabbed earlier in the day, but he refused to say who stabbed him.

Deputies and ambulance crews responded to the home. They found that it was obvious that the wounds were several hours old.

The man also reportedly said the stabbing occurred hours prior, but again refused to say who did it, the sheriff’s office reported.

Deputies took the man’s gun for safekeeping. They searched him and found a bloody knife in a pocket.

While he was being prepared for transport to the hospital, the man admitted to deputies that he was high from using methamphetamine. The man said he heard people chasing him down and trying to kill him, so he decided to kill himself before they could do it, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators found that the man’s wounds appeared consistent with self-inflicted injuries, including several “hesitation marks,” the sheriff’s office reported. The knife recovered from the man’s pocket appeared to be the right size and style to cause the injuries.

The man was transported to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
