Motorists going over Deception Pass will see some delays starting next week.

Work crews from the Washington State Department of Transportation are starting a two-week project to inspect the bridges spanning Deception and Canoe passes.

During the inspection, one lane of Highway 20 over water will close to make room for Department of Transportation vehicles needed to conduct the inspections.

These trucks carry large booms that extend over the side and then underneath the bridge.

Department of Transportation spokesman Dave Chesson said the trucks allow engineers to inspect every inch of the bridge.

“It’s an overall health check of the bridge from one end to another,” Chesson said.

The inspections for the Deception Pass Bridge goes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, March 25 through Thursday, March 28.

The inspections for the Canoe Pass Bridge, the smaller of the two bridges, go from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 1 through Thursday April 4.

If windy weather forces cancellation of any of the scheduled work days, then the inspections will continue on Friday.

“Safety is a priority when you’re working that high off the water,” Chesson.

Flaggers will alternate traffic though the one open lane during the inspection process.

The Washington State Department of Transportation inspects the bridges every two years. Workers last completed the inspection of the bridges in March 2011.

The DOT project comes weeks after the city of Oak Harbor inspected the utility lines that stretch underneath the bridge.
