If plans go through, Coupeville residents will someday see a road connecting Main Street with Broadway. The Coupeville Town Council approved its six-year transportation plan last week.
The connection between the two roads would take place if further development takes place on “Krueger Farm,†a large vacant field on the west side of town.
The town acquired the farm’s T-shaped wooded area in 2003 to maintain as open space.
Mayor Nancy Conard said the proposed road would go in outside the wooded area.
To ensure an access point from Broadway, the town purchased a property for $265,000 last December that would provide space for the new intersection.
Conard said she would expect any developer building on the land near the proposed road to pay for it.
“We’d like to have the road put in at developer expense, not at town expense,†Conard said.
The plan provides a list of 15 transportation projects that could be completed in the next several years.
Other projects added to the list this year include sidewalks on both sides of South Main Street; reconstruction of NE Fourth Street to accommodate future development on Pennington Hill; and acquiring the Captain Coupe House as a transportation enhancement activity.
There isn’t any funding attached for the new projects that would cost the town approximately $5.3 million to complete.
The Town Council approves an updated improvement plan every year. The list documents an identifiable transportation need for the town which is necessary to be eligible for grants, Conard said.
