Pint size horse born on Whidbey

“Black Jack” and “I Get a Kick Out of You” are pleased to announce the birth of “Cadillac Jack.”

Cadillac Jack is a miniature horse that was born June 26 at Lymrick Farm near Oak Harbor. He was 14-inches tall at birth, which is four inches shorter than normal miniature horses. Since his birth, he has grown four more inches and is closer in height to a typical, new-born miniature horse.

Though tiny, Cadillac Jack is no record beater. The smallest horse in the world, according to Guiness, is Black Beauty, a miniature mare 18.75 inches high. Black Beauty was less than 12-inches high at birth, weighing less than 10 ounces.

Maggie Raymond, Cadillac Jack’s owner, said the little horse is popular with the children that visit the farm, who often spend time playing with and hugging Jack.

“He is just the friendliest little guy,” Raymond said.

As owner of Cornerstone Farm located north of Oak Harbor, she has raised miniature horses for the past year and a half. She said they are easy to care for and they don’t eat a lot.

Miniature horses are able to carry riders weighing up to 60 pounds and are well adapted to pulling heavier loads in wagons.

When Jack was born, it looked like his mom would reject him. After a little persistence on Jack’s part, they are happy, Raymond said.

In addition to Jack, Raymond also has four miniature horses, Shetland ponies and a peacock that are popular with the children.

She will take Jack and other horses to show at a spina bifida camp at Fort Casey that takes place later this summer.

Raymond said the event gives wheelchair-bound children a chance to interact with animals, especially itty-bitty horses.
