PEOPLE & PLACES: Islanders never slowed down after a busy summer

Nancy Southard recently celebrated her birthday at a tea party held in her honor with close friends at Anna’s Tea Room in Coupeville. The ladies donned hats and gloves, then enjoyed lunch and tea on a Sunday afternoon. Included in the celebration were Alice Martin, Gail Jaeger, Brenda Ackley, Jan McCullough, Yvonne Musgrove, Gail Schultz and Pat Tabach.

The first membership drive in the 54-year history of Island County Historical Society’s museum is under way. “A History of Whidbey Island” is available at the museum. The book by George Kellogg has been out of print for two years.

Mike School of Oak Harbor spent a week in New York City where he attended a family reunion and viewed the site of the Sept. 11 attack. His daughter Amber accompanied him on the trip.

A recent visitor at the home of Dee and R.R. Harbour has been Kelly Playlock or Arlington, Texas. While here she and her cousin Kathy visited Mount Erie, Port Townsend, Coupeville and other spots of interest.

Steve and Colleen Dernbach are leaving their hilltop home in Oak Harbor for Yuma, Ariz., where Steve will teach in a Catholic School.

Nine teams played in the recent Interchurch golf tournament at Whidbey Golf and Country Club. One of the two teams from Christian Reformed Church took first place. With their scramble and best ball score, the team was 7 under par. Teams represented Whidbey Presbyterian Church, Christian Reformed Church, First Baptist Church and Family Bible Church. A team from Oak Harbor Lutheran Church couldn’t make the tournament. The tournament committee includes Gerald Fikse, John Solin, John Juan and Tom Litke.

Mary Vanderzicht had the pleasure recently of seeing her great-granddaughter, Shelby Gottberg, perform in the play “Annie” at Burien’s performing arts center. Gottberg played an orphan.

Army Private Michael Lopez has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is the son of Rayette Lewis of Oak Harbor; he is a 2000 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.

Senior Chief Petty Officer Mike Wendell, whose wife Jeannett is the daughter of Viva and Harold Johnson of Oak Harbor, recently reported for duty with VAQ-134 based at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.

Kristin Acton, daughter of Cmdr. and Mrs. David Acton of Oak Harbor, recently participated in the U.S. Naval Academy’s week-long summer seminar in Annapolis, Md.

During the seminar, Acton was introduced to academy life through a regimen of academics, physical training, intramural sports, sailing and seamanship, as well as leadership training and social activities. The seminar was developed to give students a taste of the challenges and benefits of a Naval Academy education. Acton attends Oak Harbor High school.

Air Force Airman Jared J. Smith has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio Texas. He is the son of Kathy Lamphiear of Oak Harbor, and is a 2000 graduated of Squalicum High school in Bellingham.

Jason E. Sechrist has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force after completing the Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) program and graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington. He is the son of Kathy Sechrist of Oak Harbor and Stephen Sechrist of Coupeville. The new lieutenant is a 1997 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.

Pacific Lutheran University named 750 students to the Dean’s List of Spring 2002. Sarah Matzen of Oak Harbor was one of the students named, having earned a grade point average of at least 3.5.

Bernie and Dola Loers spent two weeks in two directions, going first to visit grandchildren in Anchorage, Alaska, and then to California to visit grandchildren there.

Russ Barstad spent two weekends vacationing in Minnesota and visited the Barstad homestead while visiting family and friends. He reports that is was “very cool and no mosquitoes!” Sure is was Minnesota Russ?

Father Larry Bailey called his favorite koffee klatch in Oak Harbor last week from an Air Force base in Texas, hoping to talk to his parents, Mack and Lorraine Bailey. His parents had taken the day off so Father Larry visited with the koffee klatch over the telephone.
