Joshua Schulz, grandson of John and Dorothy, and a Central Washington University student playwright has seen 11 of his plays produced — 10 at Central and one at King’s High School. He recently won two spotlight playwrighting awards from the Theatre Puget Sound. He won one award last year also.
The Reverend Cornie Rientjes celebrated his 90th birthday Jan. 26 at Meadow Greens, in Lynden. The party was hosted by Ellis and Eleanor Campfield and Jack and Saralee Lathrop.
Doc and Jan Ellis spent the Christmas holidays in California’s Mill Valley, at the home of daughter Alana and family. They were joined by son Randy and family. On the way to Mill Valley the Ellis’s took Amtrak and endured a 10-hour hold-over due to freezing temperatures in the mountains. A good time with the family made up for it.
Mary Vanderzicht’s daughter and husband, Mary Beth and Donald Meno, are moving back to Bothell from Virginia. Meno is a retired Army colonel.
Dee and R.R. Harbour are enjoying their wintering in Coronado, and hope to back on Whidbey soon. Lots of sunshine in Coronado.

Anthony Massey, son of Shoko and Don Massey of Oak Harbor, recently completed Service Warfare Officer school at Newport, R.I. He will report for duty aboard the USS Paul Hamilton (DDG-60), assigned to the USS Lincoln battlegroup, as the Aegis missile CF Division officer. Anthony graduated from Oak Harbor High school in 1998, and earned a bachelor of arts degree, double majoring in economics and political science at the University of Washington in June 2002.
Islanders are making the grade at Seattle Pacific University! Recently the school announced its 2002 autumn quarter dean’s list, where students have to earn a 3.50 or higher grade point average while completing at least 12 credits. The following students made the list:

Air Force Airman Cara N. Radford recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Radford is the daughter of Dale Radford of Oak Harbor and the granddaughter of Jan Radford of Canyonville, Ore. She is a 2002 graduate of Oak Harbor High school.
Natalie Wheeler, a 5th-grader at Langley Christian School and Kylie Kuzina, a student at Oak Harbor Middle School, were the winners last year in the annual “Honor Our Children” poster/poem/essay contests held by Child Abuse Prevention Foundation (CAPF). Original drawings are being solicited in preparation for the commemoration of April 2003 as national Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Awareness month. Winners will receive a certificate and gift, and their submission will be used in the Island-wide “Honor Our Children” campaign, including production of more than 1,000 posters to be distributed throughout the community.
Original poems or essays are also requested using the theme of honoring our children and supporting healthy families. All submissions will be displayed and used during April to highlight the need for the community to help keep children safe and healthy.
Posters must be on 8 ½-inch x 11-inch paper, and essays must be no more than two pages in length. Posters, poems and essays can be mailed to CAPF at P.O. Box 623, Coupeville 98239.
