PEOPLE & PLACES: Christmas spirit fills islanders

Coupeville’s High School spirit team has given the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation (CAPF) and director Robin Hertlein a gift from the team. Recently a request went out for donations of new and slightly used bears. The CHS Spirit Team responded generously with the collection and donation of approximately 50 bears. These bears will be distributed to local law enforcement agencies, hospitals and foster care programs. This is just one example of how the new and improved CHS Spirit Team is working towards a greater partnership with the community through service.

A group of ladies recently met to pack shoe boxes for the Franklin Graham Project. The boxes, full of personal items and toys, are sent to third world countries for Christmas. Twelve boxes were packed as part of the samaritans purse project.

The PBY Memorial Association now has 170 members, 40 of whom met at the CPO Club Dec .10 for the last meeting of the old year. The next luncheon will be the last Tuesday in January, at 11 a.m. The Dec. 10 meeting featured “Where were you the day the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor?” Some very interesting remembrances were aired of Dec. 7, 1941.

Mark and Joan Reichmann, Christian missionaries in Papua New Guinea, write that they have just returned to their New Guinea home after taking a holiday visit to the United States. Mark is a former Navy man on Whidbey, and following his tour of duty, attended missionary school. He married, and the couple have four children.

Sherry Cator Bodle, former Oak Harbor resident, spent an overnight visit at the home of Mavis “Chic” Schulle last week. She was accompanied by her two twin boys, Matthew and Kevin. The family lives in Orting.

Leroy Cook, a former Oak Harbor resident, and graduate of Oak Harbor High School, visited here recently. He plans to build a home at Dugualla Bay, his business is professional reference. His home at present is Phoenix, Ariz.

Good news on the military front.

Joining under the delayed entry program, Justin W. Chaytor of Oak Harbor recently joined the Navy. Chaytor is the son of Debra L. Cruz of Oak Harbor, and attended Oak Harbor High School. He will report for active duty in February when he attends basic training at Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.

Air Force Airman Cheryl A. Bordon has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is the daughter of Teresita Bordon of Oak Harbor. Bordon is a 2002 graduate of State Street High School, Sedro-Woolley.

Navy Cmdr. George A. Marin, son of George F. Marin of Oak Harbor, recently reported for duty at Naval Reserve Center Elmendorf Air Force Base, Fort Richardson, Alaska. Marin is a 1974 graduate of Oak Harbor High School and joined the Navy in September of 1981. He is also a 1981 graduate of Brigham Young University, Utah.

Citizens for Better Schools is hosting a kick off rally for Oak Harbor High School Renovation Bond Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.. in Parker Hall. All supporters are urged to attend.
