Pedestrian hit on East Whidbey Avenue

A red Ford Mustang hit a teenager Monday afternoon as she attempted to cross five lanes of traffic on East Whidbey Avenue. The girl was transported to Whidbey General Hospital for a one-inch cut on her head. The accident occurred at NE Barron Drive, near Saar's Market Place between the Island Transit bus stop and Harbor Tower Village.

A red Ford Mustang hit a teenager Monday afternoon as she attempted to cross five lanes of traffic on East Whidbey Avenue. The girl was transported to Whidbey General Hospital for a one-inch cut on her head. The accident occurred at NE Barron Drive, near Saar’s Market Place between the Island Transit bus stop and Harbor Tower Village.

According to witness statements made to the Oak Harbor Police Department, the teen was standing on the north side of East Whidbey Avenue just east of NE Barron Drive. As she waited to cross an unknown vehicle stopped in the outside westbound lane of East Whidbey Avenue just east of NE Barron Drive. It is unclear, from the witness’ account, if the driver motioned to the female to cross East Whidbey Avenue or NE Barron Drive.

The girl then walked in front of the stopped vehicle, continuing southbound across East Whidbey Avenue toward the bus stop, when she was struck by the Mustang that was traveling westbound on the inside lane of East Whidbey Avenue. The right front bumper stuck the teenager, who rolled onto the hood of the car where she struck the left side of her head. The plastic trim on the hood likely caused the laceration to the teen’s scalp. The impact left dent marks on the hood of the Mustang.
