In our children’s combined nine years of learning in the Oak Harbor School District, the difference a dedicated teacher has made to our children’s academic successes is clearly evident. Educators who genuinely care about each child’s welfare also positively influence students’ broader views on school, friendship and adults.

The Pacific Northwest has one of the highest incidence rates of Multiple Sclerosis in the world. In January of 2003 I was diagnosed with this very unpredictable disease. I’m willing to fight and do all that I can to find a cure to help the millions of people, me included, who are fighting this terrible disease.

Two separate errors in levy rates came to light after tax bills were sent out. It turned out that a levy analyst in the assessor’s office was responsible for both errors. The county treasurer publicly criticized Mattens, a Democrat, over the snafus.
The state Department of Transportation Ferries Division is holding a series of public meetings in May. Ferry officials will provide information and hear comments about a variety of issues about the ferry system. Topics could include vessel construction, vehicle reservations, efforts to improve on-time performance, the fare change process and emergency planning.
A 17-year-old Coupeville boy accused of assaulting and seriously injuring a man with a baseball bat was arraigned Tuesday as an adult in Island County Superior Court.
Prosecutor Greg Banks said he charged the teenager, Ryan Marti, with first-degree assault because of the severity of the victim’s injuries. The 22-year-old man suffered a skull fracture and hearing loss in one ear.
