STANWOOD — How does one dominate in track and field?
The Oak Harbor boys answered emphatically Thursday afternoon, running away with nine first place finishes in a league meet against Mount Vernon and Stanwood.
“The boys had an outstanding day,†OHHS co-head coach Jay Turner said. “This is the first meet that the boys have won in a couple of years.â€
OHHS finished with 92 team points, ahead of Stanwood (58) and Mount Vernon (31).
Senior distance runner Josh Dix paved the way to victory with two first place finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. He ran a 4:51.32 and a 10:31.9 respectively.
Sophomore Rodrick Rumble also had an impressive day, leaping to first in the high jump at a height of 6-feet-2 inches. His mark is currently one of the best in the state.
Other individual first place finishers were senior Henry Vasquez; 200 (24.3), junior Jeff Lamont; javelin (149-3), junior Mark Repose; discus (113-4) and junior Will Hunter; shot put (45-7).
Both boy relay teams also won. The 400 team of Doug Valdez, Mark Anderson, Deante Lawson and Lyndon Burleson took first in 48 seconds and the 1,600 relay team of Rumble, Olimar Hunt, Vasquez and David Marriot ran to first in 3:37.
“All of the coaches were pleasantly surprised at how well the boys performed,†Turner said. “We should definitely be much improved from last year.â€
The OHHS girls also had a strong day, finishing second in the three-team league meet. The Wildcats tallied 41 points, finishing behind Stanwood (109) and ahead of Mount Vernon (36).
The girls were led by junior Bridgette Walker, who took first in the 200 and 400 meters. She ran to a 27.58 in the 200 and an impressive 1:00.5 in the 400.
“That’s one of the best times in the state right now,†Turner said.
Senior throwers Jessica Gilbert and Ashley Kingma also claimed first places for the Wildcats.
Gilbert threw the discus 99 feet, 10 inches, while Kingma hurled the javelin 112 feet, 10 inches.
Other highlights included a second place finish in the 3,200 by Erica Jensen and third place finishes from Mietra Smollack in the 800 and Christina Lafferty in the 400.
Oak Harbor, which has no home meets this season, is back in action Thursday, March 28 in Everett to face Cascade and Arlington.
