Oak Harbor’s HomeConnection students connect with history challenge

HomeConnection students will travel to the state contest after taking top honors this month at the Northwest Regional History Day.
The event was held at Western Washington University in Bellingham, with 17 schools participating. HomeConnection was the only school in the region with 100 percent of their entered students to qualify for state.
For History Day, students spend seven to nine months conducting document research, interviews and then produce an original performance, documentary, Web site or exhibit.
The winning projects included the performance, “Stop Speeding Bullets and More! Superwoman Stephanie Kwolek’s Amazing Invention of Kevlar,” by Lauren Vagt and Molly Vagt; the documentary, “The Kenny Method: Changing the Lives of Polio Patients and Impacting the Future of Rehabilitation Medicine,” by Megan Maronde; and the documentary “Heritage and Vigilance: The Innovative History of the National Archives and Records Administration,” by Adrianna Royal.
The theme for the competition was “Innovation in History: Impact and Change.”
The students will head to Bellevue College April 30 to May 1 for the state competition.
