An Oak Harbor woman admitted to stabbing Ryan A. Crumal to death in the midst of a Friday the 13th power outage in 2020.

Ilene M. Erwin pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree during a hearing in Island County Superior Court Friday. The charge is a domestic-violence crime and includes a deadly weapons enhancement.

Under the standard sentencing range, Erwin faces a possible sentence of 10 years and three months to 18 years and four months in prison, plus an additional two years for the weapons enhancement.

The sentencing hearing was set for March 1.

Matt Montoya, Erwin’s attorney, asked that the Department of Corrections complete a pre-sentence investigation.

Erwin murdered Crumal, her fiancé, at their home in a Crosby Avenue trailer park. She stabbed him multiple times with a kitchen knife and then called the police for help. She told police that Crumal assaulted her and she “just lost it,” according to court documents.

Police officers arrived in the dark trailer home to find Crumal on his back near the doorway next to a large pool of blood. The report states that he suffered from a sucking chest wound and five additional wounds. He later died from the wounds at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett after being airlifted from WhidbeyHealth Medical Center.

At the scene, Erwin was crying and telling Crumal that she was sorry, the police report states.

At the jail, Erwin told a detective that she and Crumal had planned on visiting her sister that day, but the power outage changed the plans. They ended up at home and drank tequila that night.

Erwin was previously convicted of stabbing a different boyfriend in California, but he survived the injuries.
