Five Oak Harbor High School students won the grand prize in the Island County Economic Development Foundation’s first annual Student Entrepreneur Challenge, awarded last month.

The five — Zackuriah Aketch, Magdaline Fink, Paige Jackson, Michael Lym and Brooke Taylor — sold hot breakfasts at the high school for their project. Each student got a $250 scholarship.

They were mentored by Christian Anderson of Century 21 Trophy.

The Student Entrepreneur Challenge is designed to give students real-world business experience by writing a business plan, recruiting investors and selling a product or service for one week, according to the Economic Development Foundation.

Teams of three to five students choose their product or service based on a number of factors, including skills and local demand.

Each team is paired with a business mentor from its local community.
