The cross country season got off to a bang for Oak Harbor Thursday at Camp Casey, as both the boys and girls came away with team victories.
“It’s been a couple years since both teams were able to win on the same day and it makes the bus rides home much more enjoyable,” head coach Seth Hodges said.
The girls dominated the meet, taking four out of the top six positions. Oak Harbor finished with 22 points, followed by Meadowdale with 48 and Mount Vernon with 55.
Jessica Brundidge finished second, coming across the line at 17 minutes, 14.1 seconds. She was only three seconds behind winner Carley Higgins of La Conner. Leonila Celstino was also right there, taking third overall.
“They’ve been pushing each other for the past two years and it makes them both better runners,” Hodges said.
Fourth place finisher, Amanda Gordon had a career day, knocking 10 seconds off her previous best on the 2.49 mile course. The fourth place finish was also the highest ever in a meet for Gordon.
The boys team found the win a bit closer, but they still came away eight points better than Mount Vernon.
“Mount Vernon was surprising and a very improved team,” Hodges said. “Their top six runners ran well and had us a bit worried.”
The Wildcat boys, however, took a page from the girls and put four runners in the top six.
Chris Wichers led the way, taking his sixth career varsity race and third victory on the home course with a time of 13:55.9.
“Chris looked very good — relaxed and comfortable,” Hodges said.
He was 24 seconds ahead of second place finisher Scott Cary of Mount Vernon. Junior David Marriott and Senior Kelly Garcia took third and fourth respectively.
According to Hodges, the surprise on the boy’s side was sophomore Josh Dix, who finished sixth. Dix ran a 14:43, improving 20 seconds on his personal best for the course.
