Three wins, a tournament co-championship, a near perfect no-hit game, a one-hitter, an eight-run first inning in the first at-bats of the summer — it’s tough to beat that start to a season.

The Oak Harbor Legion baseball team rolled to three wins in the season-opening North Kitsap tournament last weekend to earn the co-championship with Burlington. The title game was rained out.

Teddy Peterschmidt came within one batter of a perfect game in the opener, and Jack Richter tossed a one-hitter in the second.

Peterschmidt walked the first batter he faced, then put Olympic down in order for a five-inning no-hitter in game one, a 12-0 Oak Harbor win.

Oak Harbor blanked Puyallup 11-0 in the second game and slipped by Klahowya 5-4 in game three.

The Olympic pitcher plunked three of the first four Oak Harbor hitters; the other, Brent Mertins, hit a double in the big first inning. Brandon Bailey, Casiano Atienza, Rhys Matilla and Mertins (in his second at bat of the inning) all had singles in the uprising.

The Wildcats scored single runs in each of the other four innings. In the second, Matilla singled in a run, and in the second Anthony Stewart doubled and scored on Mertin’s third hit.

Singles by Bailey (his third of the game), Jozef Mendoza and Peterschmidt  produced a run in the fourth, and Quentin Tungate’s base hit plated the final run in the fifth.

Peterschmidt struck out three in his near perfecto.

In the win over Puyallup, Bailey singled in a run in the first, then Oak Harbor erupted for four runs in the third and six in the fourth.

In the third, four walks and singles by Bailey, Peterschmidt and Stewart resulted in the four runs.

In the six-run fourth, Oak Harbor mixed an error, hit batter, walk and singles by Danny Wolfe, Clay Doughty and Bailey for the runs.

Bailey, again, finished with three hits; Peterschmidt had two.

Starting pitcher Richter yielded only one hit, struck out two and walked none in the five-inning game.

Against Klahowya, Oak Harbor built leads of 4-0 and 5-2 and withstood a two-run rally by the losers in the final inning, the sixth, to earn a slot in the championship game.

Once again, Oak Harbor started quickly, pushing across three runs in the first thanks to a hit batter, two errors and single by Wolfe.

Three errors led to an Oak Harbor run in the second before Klahowya scored two in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Doughty doubled and eventually scored on Peterschmidt’s sacrifice fly.

Bailey started on the mound and Peterschmidt threw the final two innings.

Oak Harbor had only four hits, two by Doughty.

Oak Harbor begins league play with a home game at 6 p.m. against Burlington Thursday, May 30.
