A 21-year-old Oak Harbor man accused of assaulting a police officer is wanted on a $25,000 warrant.

Prosecutors charged Shaun Jackson in Island County Superior Court June 22 with assault in the second degree and possession of morphine.

Oak Harbor Police Officer Larry Ferguson reported that he and other officers saw Jackson in a car at the 7-Eleven North in Oak Harbor on April 18. Jackson was wanted on a Department of Corrections warrant at the time, the police report states.

Ferguson wrote in his report that he and a couple of officers pulled Jackson out of the car, but then Jackson became violent. Jackson allegedly punched Ferguson in the face and then resisted as the officers tried to restrain him, the report states.

Ferguson wrote that he zapped Jackson three times with his Taser before he finally got the young man to stop fighting.

The officer found a plastic bag containing three purple pills, later identified as morphine sulfate, in Jackson’s pocket, according to court documents.

Jackson suffered from minor injuries and was transported to the hospital after the arrest, the report states. He allegedly told another officer that he had been using methamphetamine and was having trouble kicking the habit, court documents state.

If convicted of the charges against him, Jackson could face up to three years and seven months in prison under the standard sentencing range. A criminal record increases the standard sentencing range.
