A 31-year-old Oak Harbor man who was living in an apartment with four other adults and seven children is accused of raping a child who was visiting, court documents indicate.

Prosecutors charged Eletise Asoau in Island County Superior Court Dec. 21 with the rape of a child in the second degree. He pleaded not guilty Jan. 4.

Oak Harbor Detective Mike Bailey investigated the case after a teenaged boy who lives in the apartment reported that Asoau had raped his 13-year-old friend in September.

In an interview with the detective, the alleged victim explained that he was sleeping over at the apartment when the assault occurred. The boy said he was sleeping on the couch when he awoke to find Asoau performing an unwanted sex act on him, the report states.

The boy told Asoau to stop, and when he didn’t, the boy walked into the bathroom and Asoau followed, the report states.

The victim’s friend told his father and stepmother about what happened, Bailey wrote, but they apparently didn’t report it to police.

In an interview with police, Asoau denied touching the children. He claimed one of the boys made up the story because he doesn’t like it that Asoau dresses like a woman, the report indicates.

Asoau is being held in jail on $50,000 bail. If convicted of the charge, he could face up to eight years and six months in prison under the standard sentencing range.
