Facing less than ideal conditions, the Oak Harbor girls golf team battled through heavy winds and occasional bursts of rain and dominated its first match of the season Wednesday afternoon.

The Wildcats tallied 99 Stableford points over nine holes at Whidbey Golf and Country Club, finishing ahead of Arlington (71), Sedro-Woolley (61) and South Whidbey (55).

“I am very excited with the first match and our team total,” OHHS head coach Andy Wesley said. “The girls are tough and can play through anything.

It might be cold, rainy, and windy and the girls might not like it, but they go out play to the best of their ability.”

Four of Oak Harbor’s top five golfers scored 20 points or better, something new to Oak Harbor’s fourth-year head coach.

“As long as I have been coach, we have never had four girls in the 20’s,” Wesley said.

Senior Angelica Whitley, playing in the number five position, led the Wildcats with 22 points.

“She has been with the program for the last three years but has been ineligible to compete,” Wesley said. “This year everything is working out for her and I’m so glad that she gets to participate her senior year.

I anticipate that she will have many rounds like this throughout the year. She is a great competitor.”

Sophomores Brittany Loveng and Andria Sutter tallied 21 points, while senior Kristy Gavigan scored 20. Junior Christina Carter rounded out the Wildcat field with 15 points.

Arlington’s Kalan Smith took medalist honors with 28 Stabbleford points.

Oak Harbor travels to Echo Falls Golf Course to face Monroe, Tuesday, March 21. The team then hosts the first-ever Gallery Shootout invitational, Tuesday, March 28 at the Gallery Golf Course.
