Oak Harbor finishes 2nd in state tournament | Bowling

In the second day of competition, the Oak Harbor High School bowling team overtook three teams but couldn’t jump past Moses Lake, finishing second in the state tournament in Vancouver Feb. 20 and 21.

Oak Harbor, coached by John Youngsman and Tom Cockrell,  sat in fifth place after Saturday’s first round, then skipped over Woodinville, Shorewood and Bellarmine Sunday to land in second.

Moses Lake and Oak Harbor finished 1-2, just as they were seeded coming into the 51st Annual Washington State Proprietors’ Association High School Varsity Bowling Championships.

Moses Lake won the 14-team Division I title with 52 points. Oak Harbor posted 42, and Bellarmine and Shorewood tied for third with 40.

Moses Lake finished with a team average of 193 and a total of 9,593 pins. Oak Harbor averaged 184 and collected 9,323 pins.

In all, 28 five-person teams spread over two divisions qualified for the state finals.

Oak Harbor was represented by D.J. Rutter, Daniel Johnson, Niko Hawkins, Earl Angeles and Devin McCardle.

Johnson picked up second-team, all-state honors and coaches Youngsman and Cockrell received WSBPA Hall of Fame status.

Oak Harbor finished fifth last year and was hoping to recapture the crown, which it won in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
