Local volunteers are not something anyone should take for granted. Oak Harbor would not have some of its most valued features without volunteered efforts. One of our community’s volunteer groups is the Municipal Pier Committee who has been working selflessly for more than eight years on getting a replacement public pier built in our harbor. The pier is for the benefit of all.
One of the most discouraging aspects of volunteering is when there is not a consistent strategy and commitment within a community to get the project completed. Changes in funding and priorities can make one feel like a stool has been kicked out from under you. Volunteers get burned out and projects can die. The pier has been smartly planned and funded up to this date.
Redirecting collected funds from the pier project to other city repair projects now only shows a crisis management style. So let’s all get out and yell “Come Ashore†to City Council in support of the pier project.
