Oak Harbor bowling fundraiser to aid Nepal victims

As president of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society chapter at Skagit Valley College’s Whidbey campus, Rebecca Maher is always on the lookout for sound community service projects.

So when her daughter’s Girl Scout troop raised $2,200 toward Nepal relief efforts during a car wash and bake sale in one weekend in Freeland earlier this month, it gave Maher an idea.

“We have been trying to come up with another event to do for the club,” Maher said.

“I thought, ‘If they can do that on the south end, there’s no reason why we can’t do that in Oak Harbor in a Navy town.”

Maher and her group have organized, “Bowling for Nepal,” a fundraising event filled with two hours of unlimited cosmic bowling, a raffle, prizes, music and fun.

The event will go from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, May 23, at the Oak Bowl in Oak Harbor.

Tickets are $15 with $10 going to American Red Cross earthquake relief efforts in Nepal. The other $5 is covering the bowling and shoes.

Maher said all of the proceeds from raffle tickets will go toward the relief efforts.

She said she has secured prizes from local businesses and is still seeking more.

Helping others through community service is what Skagit Valley College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter is all about.

“With the second set of earthquakes, they can’t get support and aid there fast enough,” Maher said.
