A 13-year-old boy is facing an assault charge for allegedly punching another kid outside the North Whidbey Middle School in October and then bringing a marijuana pipe into school last month, according to court documents.

According to a report by the school resource officer, another student at the school captured a video of the Oct. 20 assault. The video showed a group of kids walking out the back doors of the school. The boy and the alleged victim then pushed each other. Once they were separated, the boy punched the other kid on the left side of his face, the report states.

The victim fell to the ground and screamed in pain. He suffered a chip to an adult tooth, the report indicates.

The victim told the officer that the two teenagers had “issues” because of a comment he made about the boy’s shirt.

Prosecutors charged the boy in Island County Superior Court March 17 with assault in the fourth degree.

The boy was also charged the same day with minor in possession of cannabis. The police report states that a school employee noticed that the boy smelled of marijuana when arriving at school Feb. 14. He was searched and a pipe containing suspected marijuana was found, the report states.

The boy was the fifth North Whidbey Middle School student to be charged with a crime in the last year.
