It’s not just about cars, it’s about tradition.

And the North Whidbey Lions Club’s annual car show Saturday saw many automotive fans this year participating in this long-standing event, now in its 29th year.

Lions Club chairman Chadd Davis said a lot of the Lions are “Navy guys,” who are all about tradition.

“Except this is more of an Oak Harbor thing than a Navy guy thing,” Davis said.

In keeping with custom, more than 70 awards were given to entrants who journeyed from as far as Montana to participate.

Oak Harbor winners included Chairman’s Choice Award recipient David Putnam for his 1959 Chevy Corvette, the Mayor’s Choice recipient Timothy Collett for his 2010 Chevy Belair, the Les Schwabb Choice recipient Don Souza for his 1932 Ford Coupe and the Oak Harbor Automotive choice recipient Jim Croft for his 1979 Chevy Z-28 Camaro.

Best of Show went to Steve and Karla Howard for their 1938 Graham 97, the People’s Choice went to Michael Jones for his 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Editor’s Choice went to Diana Laferriere for her 1967 Chevy Camaro RS, and the Commanding Officer’s Choice went to David George for his 1955 Chevy Belair.

Trophy organizer and “Lion Tamer” Bob Brown said he believed this year brought a high number of attendees.

The first event 29 years ago was a small affair with only 30 or so cars, Brown said. This year, roughly 222 cars were featured in Windjammer Park.

“I thought we had more spectators walk through,” Brown said. “People just made a holiday of it.”

The North Whidbey Car Show is one of the Lions Club’s many fundraisers that help give back to the community in the form of school supplies, food donations and park cleanups.
