No one injured in sailboat fire

South Whidbey Fire/EMS personnel responded to a report of a boat fire at 12:30 p.m. Thursday near Possession Point, according to a report on the incident. Two passengers and a dog were able to escape from the 48-foot sailboat using an 8-foot skiff they had been pulling, the report states. No one was injured.

The marine rescue unit worked for three hours to try to minimize damage, but the boat sank due to damage. A spokesperson from the Washington State Department of Ecology said no oil sheen was visible after the boat sank.

The vessel was reported to have had 96 gallons of diesel aboard, and the spokesperson said if sheen is reported in the area, the department will follow up.
