Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue made quick work of a Coupeville residential fire on the afternoon of Feb. 2.

Fire Chief Ed Hartin said a sunroom on the west side of the Avalon Lane house caught fire when hot materials were inadvertently left in a wastebasket in the room.

The home’s residents called in the department at 12:27 p.m. Firefighters got the flames under control and cleared the house of smoke within around 30 minutes. No one was injured. Damage from the blaze was contained to the sunroom, though residual smoke damage may still be found throughout the house.

Hartin said the house’s occupants held the flames in check using fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived but left the door between the sunroom and the rest of the house open, allowing smoke to spread. He encouraged members of the public to contain smoke and fire damage by closing a door on the fire if possible, should they ever find themselves in a similar situation.
