No injuries sustained in Regatta fire

The property damage from a Tuesday morning fire on Regatta Drive could come with a hefty price tag.

No one was injured in a Northeast Regatta Drive fire early Tuesday morning, though the property damage from the blaze could come with a hefty price tag.

The fire began on an exterior wall in the back of the house. The cause is still under investigation. The Oak Harbor Fire Department was called at 7:18 a.m., and 15 firefighters from the department and NAS Whidbey responded.

Oak Harbor Fire Chief Ray Merrill said the fire had just started to spread to the interior of the house when firefighters arrived. According to Merrill, it took less than five minutes to extinguish the main fire, though there were spot fires to handle in the aftermath.

The four occupants who were in the rented house at the time were all safely evacuated. Damage from the fire was contained to the exterior wall, one bedroom and the attic, but Merrill estimates the cost of repairs could easily amount to $50,000. The rest of the building survived unscathed, but power to the house has been shut off because of electrical problems unrelated to the blaze.

According to a Facebook post on Alert Whidbey 2.0, Regatta Drive was temporarily detoured at the Torpedo Road and Northeast 5th Avenue intersections. The fire did not spread to any surrounding houses.
