No injuries in Thursday deck fire

No injuries were reported as result of a minor deck fire in Oak Harbor Thursday afternoon.

No injuries were reported as result of a minor deck fire in Oak Harbor Thursday afternoon.

The fire was caused by discarded smoking materials, according to Oak Harbor Fire Department Chief Ray Merrill.

The small deck fire originated in a metal bucket on the porch of an apartment off of Mulberry Street. The resident, who was not at home at the time of the fire, had put a wooden panel inside the bucket where cigarette butts were discarded.

As residents of the building were evacuating, the fire alarm was pulled, alerting fire departments. The sprinkler system also went off and extinguished the fire before it could get inside the apartment complex.

“The fire sprinkler system did its job,” Merrill said.

Damage to the deck was minor.

Merrill said there was some water damage to the lower levels of the building as a result of the sprinklers going off.

The Oak Harbor Fire Department and the Navy Region Northwest Fire and Emergency Services responded to the alarm.
