No injuries in mobile home fire

An Oak Harbor family was displaced after a fire caused extensive damage to a mobile home in the early hours of Feb. 28, the Oak Harbor Fire Department reported.

Nobody was injured in the conflagration.

Fire Chief Ray Merrill said a neighbor in the mobile home park off Northeast Seventh Avenue called 911 after hearing an explosion, which the chief said was likely aerosol paint cans exploding in the fire. The residents of the home were not home.

The call was received at 12:37 a.m. and firefighters arrived within four minutes. Merrill said the response was delayed slightly because there were no hydrants in that part of the park and firefighters had to connect hoses from further away.

Crews from the Oak Harbor Fire Department and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Fire were then able to get the fire quickly under control. North Whidbey Fire and Rescue stood by for other calls in the city, according to the fire department.

Merrill said the difference in the amount of fire damage in rooms with closed doors was distinct from those without. Two bedrooms with closed doors, for example, sustained surprisingly little damage as compared to other rooms, he said.

It’s a good example of what the slogan “close when you doze” means. People who close their bedroom doors when they sleep have extra time to escape if there’s a fire, he explained.

A car parked at the home was also destroyed in the fire.

Merrill said the cause of the blaze is under investigation. He’s trying to get in contact with the owner of the property to get permission to “go back and do some digging,” he said.
