School vandalized

Newly remodeled Crescent Harbor Elementary School suffered what could be thousands of dollars worth of damage at the hands of vandals last weekend.

Sometime between just before midnight Saturday night and 9:00 Sunday morning, vandals smashed numerous windows and the front glass doors of the buildling with large rocks, said Bruce Worley, director of operations for Oak Harbor School District.

“We had glass all the way down the hallways of that school,” Worley said, standing at the smashed front doors. Additionally, five floor-to-ceiling windows in the arena room were shattered. School district maintenance personnel had to use plywood to board up the windows, as the custom-made replacement panes won’t be ready for about another 10 days, Worley said.

One of the rocks found inside the building was about the size of a softball.

“So it had to be a good-sized human that threw that rock,” Worley said. “These weren’t elementary kids.”

Calling the vandalism a “stupid” act, Worley pointed out that taxpayers are not only having to pay the bill for the replacement glass, but also for the overtime hours of district maintenance personnel who had to clean the mess and board up the windows.
