The Oak Harbor High School boys swim will have a new face at the helm this season with Amy Nurvic taking over from Erika Miller, who had been in the head coaching position for four years.
Nurvic brings a lot of experience to the Wildcat program having been a swim coach at Mariner High School, and has also coached several other sports while living in the central part of the state.
Although the Wildcats have a small turnout of swimmers, Nurvic said she expected the team do do well in the 2008/09 season.
“I have a lot of talent on this team and I’m looking forward to a good season,” she said.
Oak Harbor is paced by senior John Hu, a versatile swimmer capable of competing in several events, who won the Class 4A state championship last year in the 200 individual medley.
Other returning swimmers are Christopher Cole, Cory Blyther, Chris Rankin, Bryce Vagt, and Anthony Yockey.
The senior group is complemented by a number of sophomores who were members of the varsity team last year as freshmen.
These swimmers include Yale Rosen, Devin Schell, Brandon Vagt, Price Hu and Tyler Schell.
“Right now I have a small number of swimmers who have come out for the team, but those I do have are really working hard,” Nurvic said.
Oak Harbor opens the season Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Lynden.
The Wildcats’ first home meet is at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, against Stanwood.
