It looks like the new and former directors of the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club switched states.
Former director Sherri Hansen moved to Virginia when her husband was transferred and Peggy Fenstermaker came from Virginia when her husband took a job on Whidbey Island.
Fenstermaker was named director of the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club and took over last week.
Prior to her new position, she served as a director of a Children’s World Learning Center and has 28 years experience working with children either in a child-care facility or as a teacher.
She chose to work for the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club because it provided the best place to put her skills to use.
“It fits right in with what I love to do,†Fenstermaker said.
Originally from Odessa, Texas, she received her BA in Community Recreation from Oral Roberts University and had lived in Virginia Beach, Va. for the past 23 years. She moved to Whidbey Island in October 2005.
She has been married to her husband, Bruce, for 23 years and they have an 18-year-old daughter, Laura.
After opening last spring, the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club has approximately 70 members that use the facility after school four days a week.
The after-school program offers a homework time, called the “Power Hour,†followed by activities until closing time. Currently the club is closed for the summer but will open when the school year begins. The club will be open Mondays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. and Tuesdays and Fridays from 2:30 to 6 p.m. The club is closed on Wednesdays. It shares the old Coupeville fire station on North Main Street with a food bank, which hands out food to needy families on Wednesday.
Fenstermaker is preparing for fund raisers and events this fall. One big event is an auction set for Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Au Sable Institute. The event features a silent and live auction, food, wine and dessert.
The club will have a back to school celebration shortly after the school year starts.
Boys and Girls Club members will also prepare for a digital art show in December, which is a precursor to a larger competition in early December.
Fenstermaker said she is looking at setting up a teen night for local middle and high school students.
