Someone broke into Coupeville High School last weekend and made off with several thousand dollars in cash and checks that was stored in the main office.

“We don’t know how they entered the high school building,” said Superintendent Bill Myhr of the Sept. 3 burglary.

He said the break-in occurred sometime after a volleyball jamboree that finished up Saturday afternoon and before Sunday morning when staff came into the school.

Town Marshal Lenny Marlborough said there wasn’t any sign of forced entry into the high school.

The thief did, however, break into the office to get to the money. Someone broke the safety glass on the door leading to the office and tore off a deadlocked door leading into a store room.

Myhr said more than $2,500 in cash and checks were taken from the school. The money came from student fees that families pay at the beginning of the school year.

“Unfortunately schools are seen as targets sometimes,” Myhr said.

Myhr said school officials are busy notifying families of the burglary. He said they were able to backtrack who had paid money and the school district will honor families’ payments.

Marlborough said there aren’t any suspects at this time, but investigators are working on several leads.

He said anyone with information about the break-in should contact the Coupeville Marshal’s office at 678-4461.

The break-in Sept. 3 was the second recent incident at Coupeville High School. Marlborough said that someone stole a projector used for presentations.

There weren’t any signs of forced entry in the incident that took place in early August.
