Masters swim in pentathalon

The North Whidbey Masters Swim Team staged its 8th Annual Pentathlon on Saturday, Sept. 8, drawing 60 competitive swimmers from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia.

NWM had several pentathlon winners including Kyle Ciminski (19), Becky Klieman (42), Julie Wilson (53) and Craig Carlson (58), each of whom won all five individual sprint pentathlon events (50 fly, 50 back, 50 breast, 50 free and 100 IM).

Ciminski’s times were all Pacific Northwest Masters Swimming records. Lee Carlson, 65, also won his sprint pentathlon division, taking four of five individual events.

NWM’s Harvey Prosser, 77, who won all his individual events to capture the “Brute” competition, which consists of the three most grueling swimming races:1500-meter free, the 200-meter fly, and the 400-meter IM. Not to be forgotten, Jim McCleery, 59, won the 1500-meter freestyle, recording the fastest time of the day for all divisions with a 19:06.39.

NWM is a North Whidbey Parks and Recreation Department adult swim team that practices for skill improvement, fitness, fun, and speed. All ages (18-and-over) and abilities are welcome and neither proficiency nor competition is required. Practices are 5:30 a.m. and noon at the Oak Harbor pool.
