Man says edibles led him to molest girl, 11

A Greenbank man allegedly admitted to sexually molesting an 11-year-old girl and blamed marijuana edibles for his crime, according to court documents

Prosecutors charged Randall E. Hanson II in Island County Superior Court Feb 5 with two counts of child molestation in the first degree.

Detectives with the Island County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case after a school official reported the alleged crimes to police last month.

The detectives made sure the child had a safe place to stay and followed the family out of the area to ensure Hanson did not follow them, according to the detective’s report.

The child told police about several instances of molestation at a home in Central Whidbey, the report states.

In an interview with detectives, Hanson “broke down, started crying” and admitting to molesting the child, saying he did it because of the pot edibles, the report states.

If convicted of the charges against him, Hanson could face an indeterminate sentence with a minimum time of about five and a half to seven years in prison, according to court documents.
