A Greenbank man who molested a child a year ago and blamed it on marijuana edibles will likely be spending a year in jail.

Randall E. Hanson II, 30, pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court to child molestation in the first degree.

Under the terms of a plea bargain, the prosecutor will recommend Hanson be sentenced under a Special Sex Offender Sentencing Alternative, a provision under state law that allows sex offenders to have shorter sentences in return for therapy and strict supervision.

The prosecutor will recommend a sentence of a year in jail with 56 months suspended for the term of the SSOSA and 36 months of community custody.

Hanson was also ordered by the judge not to have contact with the victim for life.

The sentencing hearing will be held after the Department of Corrections completes a pre-sentence investigation, which is required in sex offenses.

Detectives with the Island County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case after a school official reported the crime to police.

The 11-year-old child told police about several instances of molestation at a home in Central Whidbey.

In an interview with detectives, Hanson “broke down, started crying” and admitting to molesting the child, saying he did it because of the pot edibles, the report states.
