Man on the run enters Oak Harbor house without permission

A 22-year-old man on the run from the law went into a house without permission and stashed his drugs, according to court documents.

A deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office report that he happened to see Juan Melena walking in Oak Harbor May 16 and realized there was a warrant for his arrest.

The deputy got out of his car and told Melena to stop. Melena asked the deputy why he was being stopped while he continued walking away, then ran toward a house, according to the deputy’s report.

Melena didn’t knock but opened the door and went in, the report states. Two deputies chased Melena into the house and arrested him.

It turned out the warrant was declined.

The deputy spoke with the homeowner, who said Melena was not allowed into the house. The deputies searched the area of the house near where Melena was taken into custody. They found a plastic bag containing a white substance suspected of being methamphetamine, the deputy wrote.

Melena allegedly admitted to smoking meth earlier, the report says.

On May 17, a judge in Island County Superior Court found probable cause existed to believe Melena committed the crimes of residential burglary, tampering with evidence and possession of meth.
