“A 20-year-old Oak Harbor man who stole cash from Oak Harbor’s Plaza Cinema 3 and later tried to cash a forged check was recently sentenced to jail.Joshua Virata pleaded guilty to second-degree theft and forgery in Island County Superior Court last week. Judge Vickie Churchill handed him a 30-day sentence, a $1,396 fine and a year of community service.According to a report by Oak Harbor Police Officer Dave Melton, Virata admitted that he stole $769 from a safe at the movie theater while he was working there last November. Virata said he got the combination for the safe earlier after a manager forgot the sequence of numbers, so Virata called a former manager to find out what it was. In a separate incident, a bank teller at InterWest Bank reported to Detective Cedric Niiro that a man tried to cash a forged check on Dec. 4, 1999. Niiro investigated and found that the suspect was in fact Virata, who stole the blank check from a couple’s car while he was working at a local oil-change business. He made the check out to a fake name and was unable to cash it, but managed to get himself arrested. “
