Man dies in one-car crash on State Highway 20 near Coupeville Tuesday

An 82-year-old man was killed in a one-car accident on State Highway 20 near Coupeville yesterday. The State Patrol reported that Charles E. Carlson was driving a 1992 Toyota Previa southward on the highway and drifted off the road to the right just south of the intersection with Welcher Road.

The State Patrol reported that Charles E. Carlson was driving a 1992 Toyota Previa southward on the highway and drifted off the road to the right just south of the intersection with Welcher Road.

Carlson overcorrected, sending the minivan over the centerline and off the roadway. The vehicle struck a tree and Carlson was ejected.

Carlson, the only occupant, was killed. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The accident was reported at 4:19 p.m.

Island County Coroner Robert Bishop notified the next of kin. He said Carlson had been living in Freeland with his daughter but had a Seattle address listed as his residence.

The State Patrol reports that the cause of the accident is under investigation.
