An 18-year-old Texas man died Wednesday morning after falling 50 feet from a cliff on Pass Island, according to Island County Coroner Robert Bishop.

The coroner ID’d the man as Scott Wuensch.

Wuensch and his brother had driven up from Texas to visit the area. They were in a group of six teenagers who went hiking on Pass Island, which is the island in the middle of Deception Pass Bridge.

Bishop said that the group walked down to the shore. Wuensch and another teenager starting hiking back up ahead of the rest of the group and waited.

Wuensch went out on a limb of a Madrona tree, which broke and sent him falling. Bishop said he likely died instantly.

State parks workers reached Wuensch by boat, started CPR and then brought him to Cornet Bay, according to Mike Brown, chief of North Whidbey Fire and Rescue. He suffered “significant injuries” and was declared dead at 11:45 a.m.
