A Clinton man who stopped his car in the middle of the highway, got out and ran to try to get away from police is facing a series of charges, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Harley R. Grimm, 34, in Island County Superior Court April 17 with attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, theft in the second degree, obstructing a law enforcement officer, violation of ignition interlock law and driving with license suspended.

After he was arrested, a judge ordered that he be held without bail in a previous case.

According to a report by a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office, a trooper with the Washington State Patrol attempted a traffic stop on a car April 11, but the driver got away by exiting the vehicle on State Highway 20 in Central Whidbey and fleeing into a woods.

While on patrol the next morning, a deputy saw Harley driving a 1990 Toyota Camry on the highway near the Outlying Field Coupeville.

The deputy did a U-turn and pulled in the oncoming lane to stop the car, but the car pulled into the other lane, accelerated and passed him.

The deputy pursued the car and saw it stopped on the highway in the middle of the lane. Harley got out and ran for a woods, but this time he didn’t get away. The deputy caught and arrested him after a brief chase.

The deputy found a checkbook belonging to someone else in Harley’s pocket.

Harley was wanted on a DUI out of district court and had been ordered to have an ignition interlock device on his car, which the Camry did not have.
