An Oak Harbor man is facing a felony charge for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident on South Whidbey Dec. 24, according to court documents.
Prosecutors charged 51-year-old Michael T. Nikula in Island County Superior Court Dec. 28 with hit and run.
The collision occurred at 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Saratoga Road and Center Street in Langley, according to a report by a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office. When the deputy arrived, an EMT told him that the driver of a truck that caused the accident said he needed to get tools and drove away.
The deputy and another officer pursued the vehicle and drove around South Whidbey until finding it on Lone Lake Road. The deputy pulled the truck over.
Nikula, the driver, told the deputy that he was driving to the store and that an EMT at the scene of the crash told him he could leave.
Nikula said the collision occurred when he heard someone yell and pulled onto Saratoga Road, where he struck the other vehicle, the report states. The deputy noted that the front of the truck was damaged.
The driver of the other vehicle suffered injuries to the hands and a bloody nose.
Under state law, hit and run is a felony charge when another person is injured in the collision.
