Berte Olson brought to life

The story of Berte Olson, Puget Sound’s first female ferryboat pilot and captain will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 28 at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, 565 Camano Ave., Langley.

South Whidbey Historical Society presents Jill Johnson, professional story teller and teacher, in the 90-minute performance which she also researched and wrote.

It tells the story of Berte Olson, raised in Clinton on the south end of Whidbey, who became the first woman on Puget Sound to skipper a ferry boat and run her own ferryboat company. She ferried between Whidbey, Fidalgo and Camano Islands before construction of Deception Pass Bridge, and earned the nickname, “Tugboat Annie of Puget Sound.”

The show includes original, maritime and Norwegian folk songs as musical interludes directed and performed by Vern Olsen, with special appearance of the Shifty Sailors. There will be an exhibit of historical photographs and artifacts from the period on view in the lobby.
