“>After a shaky start that saw three Oak Harbor wrestlers go down to defeat at the Mat Classic on Friday, the Wildcats dominated their last two matches of the first round.Oak Harbor seniors Brian Lang and his cousin Brent Lang both beat their opponents to stay in the hunt for a state championship.Brian Lang, at 152 pounds, seemed as if he didn’t break a sweat during the three round 12-1 methodical beating he gave junior Joe Hathaway from Curtis High School.My impression of Brian is that he does what it takes to win and he’s doing good, said Oak Harbor head coach Brian Farmer.Brian Lang started out slow during the first round, as neither wrestler scored. The senior exploded on his opponent during the second round for seven unanswered points. The only score that Hathaway was able to gain on Lang came during the third round. I just had to wrestle smart and I wrestled smart and got the win, said Brian Lang. The matches are just going to get harder, tougher, so I just have to continue to wrestle smart.Brent Lang, at 171 pounds, also destroyed his opponent, junior Pat Bradley of Gonzaga Prep, 11-1. With one minute left during the third round Lang grabbed his Bradley’s leg and twisted it so far around that he flipped over to his back and was almost pinned by Lang. The morning started on an ominous note for the Cats as junior Jon Garcia, at 112 pounds, was beat in overtime by South Kitsap junior Derek Kipperberg, 10-8. Garcia started well as he pulled out to a 7-3 lead on his opponent during the opening moments of the second round. Kipperberg didn’t give up, as he battled his way back to 8-7 with just a minute left during the third round. Garcia was called for a stalling penalty that tied the match and sent it to overtime. Oak Harbor coaches Farmer and Karjalainen both thought that the stalling penalty was not warranted.I had his leg and his arm but I couldn’t do anything with it, said Garcia about the stalling call. Garcia was defeated in overtime as he fell victim to a take down. He took a twister and forgot to pull his arm out, said Karjalainen about the overtime. He just relaxed a little too soon.Oak Harbor junior Brent Thompson, at 145 pounds, never got on track during his first-round match. Kentwood junior Stephen Folden dominated Thompson, 18-3.Wildcat Senior Danny Wichers, at 130 pounds, was defeated by junior Mark Bentley of Emerald Ridge, 8-5. Wichers was only down 2-0 heading into the second round but after scoring a point on an escape, Folden took over and gained the victory. Oak Harbor wrestles moved on to the second round of the double-elimination tournament later Friday (results were not available at press time). “
