A 19-year-old Coupeville man accused of crawling into his girlfriend’s home armed with a kitchen knife pleaded not guilty to a felony charge that could land him in prison, court documents show.

Prosecutors charged Kagen Morgan in Island County Superior Court July 21 with first degree burglary, a domestic violence-related charge. A few days before, Judge Alan Hancock set Morgan’s bail at $75,000.

Deputy Laura Price with the Island County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of domestic violence at a Hunter Lane home July 17. A 17-year-old girl told the deputy that she and her boyfriend, Morgan, got into an argument that escalated into a frightening situation.

The girl reported that she locked herself in a bathroom after Morgan tried to stop her from leaving a room and threatened to throw her against a wall, Price wrote in her report.

Later, the girl reportedly looked out the window and saw Morgan sitting on the back porch, holding a kitchen knife. Frightened, she locked the back door, but Morgan crawled inside through the kitchen window, the report states.

The girl called 911. Morgan heard her making the call and became upset. He told the girl “she had made a huge mistake and you never call the police on me, you are so stupid and now I’m going to kill myself in front of you,” the report states. He ripped her cell phone apart and threw it down, the documents indicate.

Morgan tried to cut his wrists, so the girl ran to a bathroom and locked herself in again. Morgan kicked the door until the frame broke and it opened, Price wrote. He eventually left when he heard the police coming.

A state trooper found Morgan in the neighborhood and arrested him.

If convicted of the charge, Morgan could face from 15 to 20 months in prison under the standard sentencing range.
