An inmate at the Island County Jail died from an apparent suicide on May 14, the Island County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The inmate was identified as 57-year-old Brent Anglin of Oak Harbor. The Skagit County Multi-Agency Response Team is investigating the death.

Jose Briones, the jail chief, said the incident was captured on surveillance video and the initial evidence suggests that all policies and procedures were followed by jail staff leading up to the death.

According to Briones, Anglin had been in jail since April 23, when he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and attempting to elude police.

Briones said the jail staff completed all the usual intake and screening questions when Anglin was booked. He was seen by medical personnel within 24 hours of arrival. He was offered a variety of services. During his time in jail, he had 25 different interactions with supervisors who reviewed his status.

Briones said nothing presented as “a red flag.”

“It was very unexpected,” he said of the apparent suicide.

Anglin was staying in a jail block with six inmates.

Five of them were in the recreation area at the time of the tragedy and another was in a different room and didn’t witness it.

While Briones said he couldn’t yet release details of how Anglin allegedly killed himself, he did say that jail staff responded within a minute and attempted life-saving measures.

Paramedics arrived but were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the jail.

Island County Coroner Robert Bishop said the cause and manner of death hasn’t been determined yet.
