Information scant on rumored downtown Oak Harbor shooting

Oak Harbor Police Department officials have confirmed that an investigation concerning a recent shooting is underway.

Oak Harbor Police Department officials have confirmed that an investigation concerning a recent shooting is underway.

According to police Sgt. Teri Gardner, detectives are looking into rumors that a shooting occurred at Element Nightclub in Oak Harbor this past weekend. The investigation is ongoing however, and Gardner declined to release even basic details about the alleged event, such as when or who was involved.

She did say that a vehicle with two bullet holes in its side has been recovered but that investigators believe they were not the result of a shooting that occurred at the downtown nightclub on Bayshore Drive.

“At this time, we don’t believe it’s something that happened at Element,” Gardner said.

She also confirmed that there is no indication that anyone was hurt in the event. However, she made it clear that the investigation has just begun and that police are still piecing together what happened, who may have been involved, and where it occurred.

Oak Harbor resident Karl Sainte, who works as a disc jockey at the nightclub, claims that the shooting did not happen at Element. While he acknowledged that he did not witness the event and that he learned of the details from a “second hand” source, he said that it occurred early Saturday morning in the parking lot of the softball fields several blocks away.

“It has nothing to do with us,” Sainte said.

According to Club owner Mike Kummerfeldt, if there was a shooting it didn’t happen at his nightclub. He was in the parking lot, along with private security and several Oak Harbor police officers, at closing time.

“If anything would have happened, we all would have known,” Kummerfeldt said.
