Through the first 17 games Coupeville girls coach Geoff Kappes waited to be on the positive side of a blowout.
He finally got his wish Tuesday night with a dominating 54-26 victory over Orcas Island.
“Finally a blowout win,†he said.
The Wolves, who have been on the losing side of several high-scoring non-league contests, have won their previous seven league games via close games.
Tuesday was different, however.
CHS led from start to finish and led big.
“We did not settle for jumpshots…,†Kappes said. “Our posts got the ball in good position and our guards looked to take it to the hole.
These are good things for us.â€
Led by senior guard Beth Mouw’s nine points, the Wolves maintained a 23-11 advantage at halftime.
The first time CHS faced Orcas Island this season it also had a double-digit lead at the half. The Vikings, however, slipped back into the contest in the fourth quarter and narrowly lost 30-27.
“I talked about that briefly at halftime, but honestly we are such a different team this time around that I wasn’t too concerned about a second-half collapse,†Kappes said. “They had the confidence this time to not allow them back into the game.â€
A large part of fending Orcas Island off this time around was due to the second-half performance of guard Brittany Black.
The senior came out on fire in the third quarter, hitting her first four jump shots.
“She really wanted to make sure this game was a win for us,†Kappes said.
By the end of the third Coupeville led comfortably, 37-15.
The Wolves continued their success in the final quarter, getting big performances from junior Chelsea Rosenkrance, sophomore Hayley Ebersole and sophomore Shawna West.
Nine of Coupeville’s 11 varsity players scored on Tuesday, leaving Kappes very happy.
“We have a lot of girls that are able to play quality minutes,†he said. “All of these girls work so hard that they deserve to play.â€
The win was important for the Wolves who moved to 8-3 in the Northwest A division and were one win away from clinching a playoff spot prior to last night’s game with Concrete.
“If we win out, we go to state,†Kappes said. “That is our goal.
We are playing our best ball of the season and this is the best time of the year to be peaking.â€
The Wolves play their final home game at 5:45 p.m., Friday, Feb. 10 against La Conner and finish the regular season at Friday Harbor, Tuesday, Feb. 14.
