Christmas Day on Whidbey Island didn’t include snow, but blustery winds made a surprise stopover.

Fortunately, flying limbs and downed trees did minimal damage, and caused only isolated power outages.

Karl Kirn, Puget Sound Energy spokesman, said outages were reported fairly evenly over the whole island, but resulted in no major losses of power.

“During any one given instance, every substation held,” Kirn said. “We really fared well for the amount of wind that was blowing.”

Steady winds buffeted North and Central Whidbey on Sunday, with gusts often peaking at 40 mph.

Capt. Robert Spinner of the Central Whidbey Fire department said his firefighters responded to several tree-related calls. Fortunately, none resulted in injuries. North Whidbey Fire and Rescue also responded to several instances of downed trees and limbs.

“It was kind of an unexpected windstorm,” Kirn said. “We had the winds come through on Sunday and cause the outages, but it took ‘til Monday until power was restored.” South Whidbey also experienced scattered outages.

Kirn said two full-time PSE crews worked over the weekend to get power back to Whidbey customers.

With heavy winds forecast for today, Kirn said PSE crews are on alert in case of more outages.
