Hunting sites shot down

County bans gunfire in two popular spots

It won’t get a 21-gun salute.

On Wednesday, the Board of County Commissioners recommended revising county code that would make hunting in the northern section of Greenbank Farm illegal. In addition, shooting will be outlawed in a 200-foot buffer around residences near Deer Lagoon on South Whidbey.

“It’s going to have a big impact because there’s so few places to hunt,” said resident Dave Hollett, who said he hunts in Greenbank each year. “The areas to hunt are dwindling.”

Island County Commissioner Mike Shelton said that he wants to see the revisions to the Island County Code passed before the deer hunting season begins in September.

He said that safety is the main reason for the proposed changes. As the county’s population has grown, the amount of open space has dwindled.

“I think we’ve still got some fairly significant portions of open space for hunting,” Shelton said.

The closure of the Greenbank area removes the only 25 huntable acres in the 191-acre parcel. The changes to Deer Lagoon will remove about 18 of the 357
