Hot Mustang takes top car show honors

City Beach Park is normally the place to catch some rays, splash in the lagoon or enjoy a walk on the beach, but last Saturday those traditional activities largely gave way to the annual North Whidbey Lions Club Car Show.

City Beach Park is normally the place to catch some rays, splash in the lagoon or enjoy a walk on the beach, but last Saturday those traditional activities largely gave way to the annual North Whidbey Lions Club Car Show.

The 23rd annual presentation of the show resulted in an assemblage of some 200 of the best and the brightest of many decades of automobile manufacture.

There were cars that looked like they had just been driven off the showroom floor in the 1930s, while others were one-of-a-kind custom jobs that amazed onlookers. Top car of the day, as voted by people who should know — those who entered their own cars — went to Jerry Recker, whose two-tone, Cobra-powered 1964 1/2 Mustang GT looked and sounded like it could be launched to the moon.

While the Mustang won Best of Show honors, there were plenty of other accolades to go around, some awarded by the city’s mayor, the Navy base commander and the local newspaper editor.

Here are the final results as provided by the Lions Club. Besides supplying islanders with a great day of car viewing, money earned from entry fees goes to support the club’s many worthy community causes.
